Lake Agnes Tea House & The Big Beehive

The hike to Lake Agnes Tea House is a must-do for your bucket list during a visit to Lake Louise. The trail towards Lake Agnes encompasses a multitude of interesting features ending at a unique Tea House on the shore of Lake Agnes. Take this hike to the next level by ascending the Big Beehive to view the turquoise waters of Lake Louise.

The adventure begins from the shores of the Lake Louise by the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. You will find the departure parking area and trail to be busier during summer months; an early morning or late afternoon hike may be preferable. Early morning would be recommended for the Tea House to be open during your visit and avoiding the larger crowds.
From the parking area take the trail towards the lake and follow a counter-clockwise direction along the shore. The sign at the 5 minute mark will clearly indicate the trail on the right which gradually inclines towards the end of the lake, you will catch glimpses along the way of the majestic waters of Lake Louise. Clearly marked signs appear along every step of the route which indicate distance as well as alternative hikes that branch off from this trail.
As you near the end of the lake there is one large switch-back taking you back above the lake in the opposite direction. This is followed by some smaller switch-backs as you get closer to Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake is one of the first highlights on your journey. Families with young children may choose to make this a turn-around point but be confident with encouragement for the next treasure; a pristine waterfall. With the difficult part now over, continue the trail towards the tea house, Just before you reach the stair-case you will see the waterfall, this is a great photo opportunity.
A quick ascent of the stair-case brings you to your destination! You made it (unless you are ready for the Big Beehive challenge). You may choose to indulge on some of the fabulous Tea House menu offerings or quench your thirst from an impressive tea selection before your descent.

If you choose to continue on to the Big Beehive you are in for a treat of a different kind. Follow the lake trail in a counter-clockwise direction to the end of the lake. The next part of the trail is steep with a number of switch-backs but relatively short in length. Once you reach the top you will head to the left, the trail isn’t well defined however you will end up at a view-point shelter with views over the entire valley. By now you will have spotted the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in the distance and the vibrant waters of Lake Louise, one of the best views in the Rockies lies before you. It must be time to head back to the Tea House for that cup of tea, you deserve it!

This trail is enjoyable in a variety of weather. Rainy days will bring less traffic and the trees provide much shelter, however, the Big Beehive section may not be recommended due to visibility. A clear, calm, blue sky day will offer amazing photo opportunities and optimal views.
